There are many beaches close to the hotel; apart from Woolacombe beach, with its two miles of golden sand, there is also Barricane beach, Combesgate beach and Grunta Cove, just below the hotel, so named because a cargo of pigs was shipwrecked there many years ago! What about going rockpooling? Barricane beach especially has a wealth of fascinating rockpools. We have information at the hotel that will help you identify the rocky shore animals you may find. Do help protect North Devon's special coastline by following the Seashore Code. Handle with care Poking and squeezing soft-bodied animals like sea-anemones can harm them. Don't make animals homeless Make sure a shell is empty before taking it home. Don't leave litter Take it home with you. It can kill wildlife. Put things back where you found them Always replace animals and plants where you found them. Don't leave animals in a bucket. Watch where you walk Be careful not to dislodge or crush small sea creatures. Don't force animals like limpets off rocks. and finally Look after yourself Check the tide and keep away from cliffs. Surfing is also popular in the area and North Devon boasts one of the best surfing beaches in the UK. Wet suits and surf boards can be hired in the Woolacombe village. To check out up to date surf conditions here and take a look at the Woolacombe web-cam click here. Combegate Beach is the nearest beach to Lundy House Hotel. Mortehoe is a great place to walk as we're surrounded by National Trust Land. You can see some amazing wildlife on the way to Morte Point. Kestrels, Buzzards, stonechats are all regularly seen. You may also be lucky enough to catch sight of seals, porpoise or dolphins off the coast. The North Devon and Exmoor Walking Festival is held in North Devon. More information can be found here. These walks are led by expert leaders who have a detailed knowledge of the area. If you prefer to discover the North Devon Coastline for yourself you may want to use a walking guide. These can be found at the following website:- www.westcountrywalks.co.uk Apart from surfing and walking, there are also local riding stables, boat trips from Ilfracombe and several golf courses. Saunton, Ilfracombe and Mortehoe Golf courses are all close by. "Apart from St Andrews, Saunton is probably the finest 36 holes of links golf in the British Isles" - Colin Callender Editor, Golf Monthly Further information can be found by clicking here. ![]() |
